Tamaki’s History & Achievements

In 1989 Mike and Doug Tamaki began building a legend…

The story began with the sale of a Harley Davidson motorcycle and the purchase of a 16-seater mini bus. Mike had been looking everywhere for money to develop a tourism business idea and had been declined a bank loan. When it looked like all avenues had been exhausted, out of the blue, brother, Doug (with a little persuasion) sold his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Next thing you know the Tamaki brothers were on the way back from Auckland in a ‘not-so-shiny’ 16 seater Japanese minibus. And all the way home, they nutted-out the plan. History was in motion. The concept saw the Tamaki brothers and their families create a whole new encounter with Maori culture, outside of the hotel environment. The venture was ground breaking.

To this day, the Tamaki brother’s real success centres on the perfect balance of skills between them. Ambition, vision, and the sharp eye for a winning idea is balanced against attention to detail, thorough understanding of the tourism industry and cultural arenas, and a commitment to constant improvement and sustainable business practice.

Tamaki Group Holdings has an impressive track record, with proven success in developing multi- award-winning Maori cultural experiences . Tamaki own and operate two successful culture and heritage businesses in New Zealand – one in Rotorua, the other in Christchurch. Tamaki has won the prestigious New Zealand tourism award for culture and heritage on four separate occasions and remains the only indigenous tourism company to win the jewel in the tourism crown, The Supreme Tourism award. The company has also won the Ernst and Young – Entrepreneur of the Year Award as well as a plethora of regional culture and heritage awards. In short, Tamaki is New Zealand’s most awarded Maori-owned tourism company.
