The Realm of Tane is a dramatic blend of guided tour, character theatre and cultural storytelling, within a fully covered series of spaces, including a theatre, an indoor native garden and a cave.
This one hour highly-personalised cultural storytelling and Maori performing arts experience relays one family’s perspective. Join a young woman’s journey as her grandmother and the uncle nurture understanding around the place of our ancients – their values, their stories, their choices and their struggles within the context of today.
The story begins on the steps of a meeting house. You will be lead back to the beginning of time where storytelling blends with subtle technology, to relay the Maori creation story.
You will trace the star path our old people, followed across Te Moana Nui a Kiwa, the Pacific Ocean and you will learn to understand the courage required for their migration to Aotearoa New Zealand.
You will taste the plants they discovered and understand the changes they made to survive in a radically different environment upon arrival in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Within the theatre space, feel the impact of European arrival upon Maori. Through the eyes of the young woman, meet some of our heroes, unravel the events, the challenges and the experiences Maori have journeyed through to emerge within this century with dignity in-tact and a real hope for a strong future.
